cutting up banana peels
- You eat a banana,
- you throw the peel away.
It’s pretty simple. I think part of the deal has always that you don’t throw the peel away on your neighbor’s front step, or hilarity will ensue, and suits might… hilare? Never mind, the point is, in our house, the ritual has changed. Now it’s:
- You eat a banana,
- you throw the peel on the cutting board,
- you get a knife,
- you cut the peel into little pieces,
- and THEN you throw it away.
into the green box under the sink. - Then you throw it away AGAIN, later. Into the compost bin outside.
I didn’t mention the washing of the knife. But then I don’t always do that. But now our compost bin is starting to fill up with SMALL pieces of orange peel, banana peel, apple core, and whatnot, because we’re pretty sure that BIG pieces are not going to decompose. But looking in there, I’m not too sure about this stuff either. Maybe it’s because it’s winter, maybe we need some bone meal in it (that sounds nice doesn’t it?), maybe we need more grass, but we don’t have any because as I mentioned it’s winter, but the peels and shells and things still pretty much look like peels and shells and things.
But they’re together. In a black container. In our yard, NOT in a garbage bag in the dump. And you know, I feel pretty good about all that. The fact that we have a yard, even.
It’s funny how banana-eating has gotten a bit more complicated, though.
