Purring
I haven’t heard that sound so intimately connected with my life for awhile, but we’re starting to again. We started looking for a kitten, for real, last week. And now, through the grace of god and a woman who really wanted to get a kitten off our hands, we have one.
It was going to be a half-assed surprise (half-assed because Erika had been corresponding with this woman and asked me to call her, and we were already looking anyway) but it turned out quarter-assed, or pretty much ass-free, because the woman called Erika as soon as she got home after I’d picked up the kitten (a clandestine affair involving a rendezvous on the neutral territory of Petsmart near Westminster Mall) and told Erika, “Your husband just took the kitten and was planning to surprise you with it, but I thought I’d call you and tell you this…”
Well, or something like that. Odd. But we have a kitten!
When Erika got home, our conversation went something like this—after she finished cooing about the delightful creature:
E: So, we have a kitten!
J: [proudly] Yep!
E: I thought we wanted a shorthair.
J: Well, they’re kind of short‚Äî [as he idly picks a few hairs off his shirt]
E: Is it healthy? Has it been to the vet?
J: Err… don’t know?
E: You didn’t ask her if she’d taken it to the vet? Isn’t there some kind of cat disease that could affect me [being pregnant and all]?
J: Well, I… no, I didn’t ask her.
E: Is it a boy or a girl?
J: [sheepish grin]
Pause.
J: Look, we have a kitten!
E: It’s really sweet.

Love the marmoleum in the first picture. Is it really warm enough in your home for shorts? Sam is conspicuously absent in these photos. When will we see the first blended family photo? Sophie thinks you should name the cat 1) Sam 2) Julie 3) Jolie. I hope you guys will think over the name really carefully and come up with something as cool as Pokhra (remember, we inherited that name – someone else did the research) or Loosely (as in “loosely put together”, the dog in the book Zeek Silver Moon. Congrats!
